Reviews of the Meat Beat Manifesto - Mindstream (2):
we have the Orbital classic, the weird IDM shit from AFX, and i quite like the breakbeats on the flip. solid
deadly claw
I think this record was the turning point for me, when I broke away definitively from 80's "progressive" toward techno/rave culture and music. Up to that point I had listened to a lot of Wax Trax/EBM/industrial, but I had no idea what else was had been going on in the UK, Chicago or Detroit club scenes leading up to the early 90's.

I found this in the used bin and bought it because I had MBM's Storm the Studio and thought why not.... Well, the MBM tracks were OK, but these guys Orbital and Aphex Twin, neither of whom I had known, kind of blew my mind. Discovering this record in some ways changed my life.

About the music- The MBM tunes are fairly good but I'd say just a bit above average. Despite my initial fascination, Aphex's mix could be rated the same- it's like something from ICBYD, much the same bassline as "Start As You Mean To Go On", with a nice midpoint breakdown, but....

Neither have much of a chance of escaping the long shadow cast by Orbital's mix here. It is a pure classic, re-released as "Remind" on the Brown album (as mentioned above). Those first 32 measures of crystal clear, soaring melody still give me goosebumps.
